The UEFA Champions League is an annual football club competition played between the European national league champions and other top clubs from Europe. At the time it was called the European Champion Clubs' Cup (though commonly known as the "European Cup").

A round-robin group stage was added in 1991.

The final of the 1991 European Cup was played at Stadio San Nicola, Bari, Italy on May 29, 1991. The match was won by Red Star Belgrade, Yugoslavia.
