The UEFA Champions League is an annual football competition played between top European club teams, which has been held since the 1955-56 season.

  • Real Madrid hold the record for the most victories, having won the competition 15 times, including the the first five tournaments, and the latest in 2024. See all winners.
  • In 2000, two Spanish teams battled in the final, though they were from different cities.
  • The 2013-14 final was the first in the tournament's history to feature teams from the same city. The same two clubs faced each other again in the 2016 final.
  • The 1973-74 tournament final was the only time a replay was required. The first meeting between Atlético de Madrid and Bayern Munich finished in 1-1. The replay two days later, Bayern won 4-0.
  • Up until 1992 the tournament was called the European Cup or European Champions' Cup (officially the European Champion Clubs' Cup, or Coupe des Clubs Champions Européens in French).
  • Originally only 16 teams participated in the inaugural tournament in 1956. In 1960 the tournament expanded to 32 teams, and in 2024/25 expanded again to 36 teams.
  • Bayern Munich won all of their matches in the 2020 tournament, en route to winning the final. It is the only team to have ever achieved this feat.
