A total of 28 sports were listed on the LA 2028 initial sports program announced by the IOC in February 2022: aquatics, archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, canoeing, cycling, equestrian, fencing, football, golf, gymnastics, handball, hockey, judo, rowing, rugby sevens, sailing, shooting, skateboarding, sport climbing, surfing, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, volleyball and wrestling.

Another five sports were proposed by the LA28 Organizing Committee for inclusion at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028, and approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in October 2023. They are baseball-softball, cricket, flag football (a limited-contact version of American football), lacrosse, and squash.

Boxing at the Olympic GamesBoxing did not feature on the initial sports list but the IOC have promised it will be added

Boxing did not feature on the initial list, but was addded in March 2025, while modern pentathlon and weightlifting were also previously confirmed.

Breakdancing, which made its debut in Paris 2024, has been left off the program for 2028. Other sports which were considered but missed out are kickboxing, karate and motorsport.

If all these sports are included on the final program, there will be 36 sports in total. Compared this list to the 2024 Paris Olympic sports, in which there were 32 sports.

The Los Angeles 2028 Olympics will feature 351 medal events —22 more than at Paris 2024.

Some Changes

  • ARCHERY: Compound archery will be at the Olympic Games in the form of a mixed-team event.
  • ATHLETICS: will feature a mixed 4x100m, becoming the second mixed-gender event in the sport, joining the 4x400m relay
  • GOLF: A mixed-team event has been added for LA28.
  • ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS: A mixed-team event has been added for LA28.

  • CLIMBING: Sport climbing also gained two medal opportunities by separating a previously combined event and creating three distinct medal events: speed, boulder and lead.
  • FOOTBALL: The men's tournament has been reduced to 12 teams from 16, while there will be 16 women's teams, up from 12, thereby maintaining the overall tournament size consistent with previous Olympic Games.
  • WATER POLO: the women's competition will increase the number of competing teams from 10 to 12 for LA28.
  • TABLE TENNIS: he inclusion of a mixed team event in table tennis and the replacement of men's and women's team event with men's and women's doubles events.
  • BASKETBALL: The basketball 3x3 tournament will expand to include 12 teams per gender, an increase from eight teams at the Paris Olympics.
  • BOXING: an additional weight class added to the women’s competition: resulting in seven weight classes for both the women’s and men’s tournaments.
  • ROWING: will also include beach sprint (coastal rowing) competitions for the first time. There will be medals in women’s solo, men’s solo and mixed double sculls.
